Rachel Carson was a marine biologist, writer, and mother of the environmental movement.

A courageous and outspoken opponent of pesticides, insecticides, and other agricultural poisons that were dumped unchecked into the soil, water, and air in the mid-20th century, Carson exposed herself to violent criticism from those who saw chemicals as a solution for everything and profited greatly from their use. Despite having cancer, Carson continued to write because she knew how high the stakes were. Largely thanks to the environmental movement that Carson’s writings inspired, the pesticide DDT was banned in the United States in 1972, and in Italy in 1978. Carson was already dead by this time, but the victory belonged to her.

While almost everybody has heard of Silent Spring, the environmentalist manifesto that Rachel Carson published in 1962, many are unaware of The Sense of Wonder: A Celebration of Nature for Parents and Children, a beautiful book that captures the wonder of the universe as a child experiences it, reawakening in all of us an ancient desire for communion with the living world. This work first appeared as an article in the magazine Woman’s Home Companion in 1956 and was then published by Harper in 1965. Aboca published an Italian translation in 2020.

Actress, writer, and voice actress Lella Costa will perform a reading of Rachel Carson. Costa has collaborated on various radio and television programs and is best known for her theatrical monologues.
