Interrogating the nature of consciousness means trying to find answers to crucial questions.

What is consciousness, and what is its relationship to nature, machines, and the human condition? Can consciousness be a property of machines or is it exclusive to nature? Does it distinguish humans from the rest of material reality? How can consciousness (and its close link with nature) help us to liberate ourselves from an extreme individualism in which we look down on, commodify, and rapaciously consume the environment, its resources, and common goods?

What conclusions might science and spirituality lead us to?

  • Federico Faggin is an Italian-American physicist, inventor, and entrepreneur. In 2010, he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from US President Barack Obama for leading the invention of the Intel 4004, the world’s first commercially produced microprocessor. In 2019, Italian President Sergio Mattarella awarded Faggin the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, the highest honor of the Italian Republic. Mondadori just published Faggin’s book, Oltre l’invisibile: Dove scienza e spiritualità si uniscono (Beyond the invisible: Where science and spirituality meet).
  • Vito Mancuso is a theologian who has been teaching in the master’s degree program in Meditation and Neuroscience at the University of Udine since 2019. He wrote for the newspaper La Repubblica from 2009 – 2017 and has been a columnist for La Stampa since 2022. His latest book, published this year by Garzanti, is titled La via della bellezza (The way of beauty).
