Humans can live—and have lived—in almost every ecosystem on Earth. But in recent decades, over the span of just a few generations, we have become specialists at living in one particular habitat: cities.

Most people on the planet now live in urban areas. Cities are lively places full of creativity that offer all kinds of social, cultural, and economic opportunities. But there is a flip side, because cities consume great quantities of energy, they can become unbearably hot in summer, and they often alienate us from the natural world that is our home. How can we rediscover our knowledge of nature and our relationship with it, even in urban spaces?

  • Elena Granata is a Professor of Urban Planning at the Polytechnic University of Milan and vice president of the School of Civil Economy. Her books include Biodivercity: Città aperte, creative e sostenibile che cambiano il mondo (Biodivercity: Changing the world with open, creative, sustainable cities), published by Giunti and Slow Food in 2019; and Placemaker: Gli inventori dei luoghi che abiteremo (Placemaker: The inventors of the places where we live), published by Einaudi in 2021.
  • Gaetano Giunta is a theoretical physicist, secretary general of the Messina Community Foundation, expert in social and cultural economics, and scholar of complex systems and phenomena.
