You’ll find them at schools in Italy, the United States, and all over the world. They’re in cities and rural areas of Africa. They are therapeutic, urban, social, convivial, educational, collective. They enhance the quality of life in prisons, hospitals, and many other places. They represent a commitment to joy, kindness, and the future for the whole planet. They are the Slow Food gardens!

It has been just over 20 years since the first Slow Food gardens were cultivated. Come to this conference to hear how the project has evolved and where it’s headed, and to discover how tending a vegetable garden is the simplest, most poetic and concrete way to understand the meaning of the word “biodiversity,” to build a proper relationship with the foods that nourish us and with all living things, and to appreciate the fundamental importance of preserving basic common resources.

The Slow Food gardens would not be a reality without the many activists who have committed themselves to the project. Among these, we honor and remember Davide Ghirardi, who passed away prematurely in 2014. Davide did his most important work in the Slow Food education office, where his qualities as a person and a colleague left a profound mark.

Panelists:

  • Alice Waters (USA) is a chef, essayist, food education activist, vice president of Slow Food International, and owner of the famous Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California. In 1996 she created the Edible Schoolyard project, a vegetable garden cultivated by students. It is thanks to Alice Waters that Michelle Obama created the organic garden at the White House.
  • Michele Romano, secretary of Slow Food Veneto, has followed Slow Food’s school gardens project for years.
  • Cristina Bertazzoni is a professor at the University of Brescia and the University of Trento, and a member of the Slow Food Education Commission.
  • Girls and boys from the Slow Food garden projects.
